ªªªªªªªªªªªªªª Points ªªªªªªªªªªªªªªª
This was the inaugural year for OHJA to recognize
schooling divisions. This presented a
challenge as we tried to incorporate both the Oklahoma City and the Tulsa area
divisions. We appreciate your patience
as we worked through many of the issues that developed right up through the end
of the year.
One concept frequently used with schooling divisions is
having the points retroactive from the join date to the beginning of the show
year. The philosophy behind it is a
sound one (speaking for those of us who originally stumbled into the horse show
ring rather blindly). It is designed to
capture those students who do not interface routinely with sources of
information concerning the organizations that provide year end
recognition. What it is NOT intended
for is someone who tracks their points all year, calculates that they would
qualify for a year end award, and THEN decides to join. In retrospect, the last opportunity to join
and have points count retroactively should be the third to the last OHJA
recognized show in the show year. This
would encompass the three show minimum rule.
Although OHJA accepted schooling points retroactively
this past show year, OHJA Bylaws do not specifically state that schooling
division points will be treated that way routinely. There will be an opportunity for the membership to voice their
opinions on this and other issues at the annual meeting on January 31.
We relaxed the minimum show rule required to qualify for
a year end award from three to two for the 2003 show year. This increased the number of competitors
recognized.
One issue that created a great deal of difficulty
surfaced when GO’s rated show results stopped providing complete results. Their rated show results now only include
information on competitors who placed
in a class. OHJA requires that a
competitor show (not necessarily place) in a division three times to qualify
for a year end award in that division.
GO rated show results will not allow OHJA to determine if OHJA members
were in the class unless they place.
Another topic of discussion has been how Junior AO
Jumpers are recognized. OHJA follows
USAE guidelines in recognizing rated divisions. Junior AO Jumpers are recognized based on money won, not
points. Classes that qualify for this
division include any jumper class at levels 4 through 7 and not open to professionals. Not all shows offer prize money for these
levels and some do not offer money at all.
Some thought has been given to the idea that it would be more equitable
if points could be awarded relative to the prize money offered at a show or
some derivation thereof. This would
incorporate the theoretical higher level of competition that prize money
attracts and not let one high prize money show skew the overall year end
results. For example, at one show this
past season a second place ribbon in a level 6 class earned $150, yet at another
equally rated show a second place was worth $55. Classes at level 4 rarely offer money and a second place gets
you the equivalent of $9. It begs the
question whether one show should be valued significantly more than the
other. This certainly is not the case
for Hunters where equally rated shows assign equal points. OHJA has always followed USAE rules for
recognizing divisions. If we go to a
modified point system for JR/AO Jumpers then we will be breaking from tradition.
